शिशुपाल उवाच विभीषिकाभिर्बह्वीभिर्भीषयन्सर्वपार्थिवान् न व्यपत्रपसे कस्माद्वृद्धः सन्कुलपांसनः
Śiśupāla said: "You are old and you defile your lineage. You try to frighten all these kings with your threats. Are you not ashamed?
शिशुपाल ने कहा: "तुम बूढ़े हो और अपने वंश को अशुद्ध करते हो। तुम अपनी धमकियों से इन सभी राजाओं को डराने की कोशिश करते हो। क्या तुम्हें शर्म नहीं आती?"
You are supreme among all the Kuru-s. But since you live in the third state, it is but appropriate that you should offer advice that runs counter to dharma.
आप समस्त कुरुवंशियों में सर्वोच्च हैं। लेकिन चूँकि आप तीसरी अवस्था में रहते हैं, इसलिए यह उचित है कि आप ऐसी सलाह दें जो धर्म के विपरीत हो।
O Bhīṣma! With you at the forefront, it is but natural that the Kaurava-s should be like a boat tied to a boat, or like a blind man following the blind.
हे भीष्म! आपके अग्रणी होने पर, यह स्वाभाविक है कि कौरव नाव से बंधी हुई नाव की तरह हों, या अंधे के पीछे चलने वाले अंधे की तरह हों।
You have once again injured our minds by specially recounting this one's deeds, such as the killing of Pūtanā and so on.
पूतना वध आदि इसके कर्मों का विशेष वर्णन करके आपने एक बार फिर हमारे मन को घायल कर दिया है।

अवलिप्तस्य मूर्खस्य केशवं स्तोतुमिच्छतः कथं भीष्म न ते जिह्वा शतधेयं विदीर्यते
O Bhīṣma! You are arrogant and stupid. If you wish to praise Keśava, why does your tongue not splinter into a hundred parts?
हे भीष्म! तुम अहंकारी और मूर्ख हो. यदि आप केशव की स्तुति करना चाहते हैं, तो आपकी जीभ सौ भागों में
क्यों नहीं बंट जाती?
O Bhīṣma! You are supposed to be old in wisdom. Yet you wish to praise a cowherd. His evil repute is recounted by even those who are like children among men.
हे भीष्म! तुम्हें बुद्धि में बूढ़ा माना जाता है। फिर भी आप एक चरवाहे की प्रशंसा करना चाहते हैं। उसकी दुष्ट प्रतिष्ठा का वर्णन वे लोग भी करते हैं जो मनुष्यों में बालकों के समान हैं।
O Bhīṣma! If he killed a vulture when he was a child, what is extraordinary? Aśva and Vṛṣabhā weren't skilled in the art of war.
हे भीष्म! यदि उसने बचपन में एक गिद्ध को मार डाला, तो इसमें असाधारण बात क्या है? अश्व और वृषभ युद्ध कला में कुशल नहीं थे।
O Bhīṣma! What is extraordinary if he kicked down an inanimate wooden cart with his foot?
हे भीष्म! यदि उसने एक निर्जीव लकड़ी की गाड़ी को अपने पैर से नीचे गिरा दिया तो इसमें क्या असाधारण बात है?

वल्मीकमात्रः सप्ताहं यद्यनेन धृतोऽचलः तदा गोवर्धनो भीष्म न तच्चित्रं मतं मम
O Bhīṣma! It is my view that there was nothing remarkable in holding up Govardhana mountain for a week. It was nothing but an anthill.
हे भीष्म! मेरा मानना है कि गोवर्धन पर्वत को एक सप्ताह तक रोके रखने में कोई उल्लेखनीय बात नहीं थी। यह एक एंथिल के अलावा और कुछ नहीं था।
O Bhīṣma! When we hear from you that he ate great quantities of food while sporting on a mountain top, we are astonished even more.
हे भीष्म! जब हम आपसे सुनते हैं कि उसने पहाड़ की चोटी पर खेलते हुए बहुत अधिक मात्रा में भोजन किया, तो हमें और भी अधिक आश्चर्य होता है।
You are knowledgeable in dharma. What can be more extraordinary than killing the greatly strong Kaṃsa, whose food he had partaken?
आप धर्म के ज्ञाता हैं. अत्यंत बलवान कंस को मारने से अधिक असाधारण बात क्या हो सकती है, जिसका भोजन उसने खाया था?

न ते श्रुतमिदं भीष्म नूनं कथयतां सताम् यद्वक्ष्ये त्वामधर्मज्ञ वाक्यं कुरुकुलाधम
O Bhīṣma! O wretch of the Kuru lineage! You do not know dharma. I will now tell you the words of the righteous ones, since you do not seem to have heard them.
हे भीष्म! हे कुरु वंश के दुष्ट! आप धर्म को नहीं जानते. अब मैं तुम्हें धर्मियों की बातें बताऊंगा, क्योंकि ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि तुम ने उन्हें नहीं सुना।

स्त्रीषु गोषु न शस्त्राणि पातयेद्ब्राह्मणेषु च यस्य चान्नानि भुञ्जीत यश्च स्याच्छरणागतः
One should not use weapons against women, cattle, brāhmana-s, those whose food has been partaken and those who seek refuge.
किसी को भी महिलाओं, मवेशियों, ब्राह्मणों, जिनका भोजन खा लिया गया हो और जो शरण में हों, उनके खिलाफ हथियार का उपयोग नहीं करना चाहिए।

इति सन्तोऽनुशासन्ति सज्जना धर्मिणः सदा भीष्म लोके हि तत्सर्वं वितथं त्वयि दृश्यते
O Bhīṣma! Righteous, honest and virtuous ones of this world have always instructed us this way. It seems all this has been wasted on you.
हे भीष्म! इस संसार के धर्मी, ईमानदार और सदाचारी लोगों ने हमें सदैव यही शिक्षा दी है। ऐसा लगता है कि यह सब आप पर बर्बाद हो गया है।

ज्ञानवृद्धं च वृद्धं च भूयांसं केशवं मम अजानत इवाख्यासि संस्तुवन्कुरुसत्तम गोघ्नः स्त्रीघ्नश्च सन्भीष्म कथं संस्तवमर्हति
You speak to me about Keśava, praising him as old in wisdom, old and superior. O supreme among the Kuru lineage! Do I not know anything? O Bhīṣma! How does the killer of a cow, and the killer of a woman, deserve praise?
आप मुझसे केशव के बारे में बात करते हैं, उसकी प्रशंसा करते हुए कहते हैं कि वह बुद्धिमान, बूढ़ा और श्रेष्ठ है। हे कुरु वंश में श्रेष्ठ! क्या मैं कुछ नहीं जानता? हे भीष्म! गाय का हत्यारा और स्त्री का हत्यारा कैसे प्रशंसा के पात्र हैं?
"He is foremost among all intelligent ones.","He is the lord of this universe." Hearing these words of yours, Janārdana believes them to be true. But it is certain that all this is false.
"वह सभी बुद्धिमानों में अग्रणी है।", "वह इस ब्रह्मांड का स्वामी है।" आपकी ये बातें सुनकर जनार्दन उन्हें सत्य मानते हैं। लेकिन ये तो तय है कि ये सब झूठ है.

न गाथा गाथिनं शास्ति बहु चेदपि गायति प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि भूलिङ्गशकुनिर्यथा
Even if a raconteur sings praises many times, those praises aren't praise for the raconteur. Like bhūliṅga-s and vultures, every being acts according to its nature.
भले ही एक रैकोन्टूर कई बार प्रशंसा गाता हो, लेकिन वे प्रशंसाएँ रैकोन्टूर के लिए प्रशंसा नहीं हैं। भूलिंगों और गिद्धों की तरह, प्रत्येक प्राणी अपनी प्रकृति के अनुसार कार्य करता है।
There is no doubt that your nature is vile. The Pāṇḍava-s think Kṛṣṇā deserves worship. They must also be evil.
इसमें कोई सन्देह नहीं कि तुम्हारा स्वभाव नीच है। पांडव सोचते हैं कि कृष्ण पूजा के योग्य हैं। वे भी बुरे होंगे.
You show them the path. You speak of dharma. But though you know about dharma, you have strayed from that path.
तुम उन्हें रास्ता बताओ. आप धर्म की बात करते हैं. परन्तु यद्यपि तुम धर्म को जानते हो, फिर भी तुम उस मार्ग से भटक गये हो।

को हि धर्मिणमात्मानं जानञ्ज्ञानवतां वरः कुर्याद्यथा त्वया भीष्म कृतं धर्ममवेक्षता
O Bhīṣma! Which learned one, with dharma in his heart and supreme among all learned ones, will act as you have, ignoring the precepts of dharma?
हे भीष्म! कौन सा विद्वान, जिसके हृदय में धर्म है और सभी विद्वानों में सर्वोच्च है, धर्म के नियमों की उपेक्षा करके आपके जैसा कार्य करेगा?

अन्यकामा हि धर्मज्ञ कन्यका प्राज्ञमानिना अम्बा नामेति भद्रं ते कथं सापहृता त्वया
O Bhīṣma! If you think you know dharma and think yourself to be wise in intelligence, why did you abduct the maiden Ambā? She desired someone else.
हे भीष्म! यदि आप सोचते हैं कि आप धर्म को जानते हैं और स्वयं को बुद्धि में बुद्धिमान मानते हैं, तो आपने युवती अम्बा का अपहरण क्यों किया? वह किसी और को चाहती थी.
Your brother Vicitravīrya followed the path indicated by the righteous ones. That king did not accept the maiden you had abducted.
आपके भाई विचित्रवीर्य ने धर्मात्माओं के बताए हुए मार्ग का अनुसरण किया। उस राजा ने उस कन्या को स्वीकार नहीं किया जिसे तुमने अपहरण कर लिया था।
He is the one on whose wives others had to beget children. You believe yourself to be wise. But in your sight, others fathered offspring.
वह वही है जिसकी पत्नियों से दूसरों को बच्चे पैदा करने पड़ते थे। आप स्वयं को बुद्धिमान मानते हैं। परन्तु तुम्हारी दृष्टि में दूसरे लोग सन्तान उत्पन्न करते हैं।

न हि धर्मोऽस्ति ते भीष्म ब्रह्मचर्यमिदं वृथा यद्धारयसि मोहाद्वा क्लीबत्वाद्वा न संशयः
That is not the path of the righteous. O Bhīṣma! Where is your dharma? Your brahmacarya is in vain. There is no doubt that you uphold it as a result of delusion or impotency.
वह धर्मी का मार्ग नहीं है. हे भीष्म! आपका धर्म कहाँ है? तुम्हारा ब्रह्मचर्य व्यर्थ है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि आप इसे भ्रम या नपुंसकता के परिणाम स्वरूप कायम रखते हैं।

न त्वहं तव धर्मज्ञ पश्याम्युपचयं क्वचित् न हि ते सेविता वृद्धा य एवं धर्ममब्रुवन्
I do not see you as one who knows dharma. I do not see you prospering. You have not served the old, or those who speak of dharma.
मैं आपको ऐसे व्यक्ति के रूप में नहीं देखता जो धर्म को जानता है। मैं तुम्हें समृद्ध होते नहीं देख रहा हूं. तुमने बुज़ुर्गों या धर्म की बात करने वालों की सेवा नहीं की है।
Offerings, alms, studying and sacrifices characterized by a lot of dakṣiṇa—these are not worth a sixteenth of what is obtained through a son.
भेंट, भिक्षा, अध्ययन और यज्ञ जिनमें बहुत अधिक दक्षिणा होती है - ये पुत्र के माध्यम से प्राप्त होने वाली वस्तु के सोलहवें हिस्से के बराबर भी नहीं हैं।
O Bhīṣma! Whatever is obtained through many vows and fasts certainly goes in vain if one does not have a son.
हे भीष्म! अनेक मन्नतों और व्रतों से जो भी प्राप्त होता है वह पुत्र न होने पर निश्चय ही व्यर्थ हो जाता है।
You do not have offspring. You are old. You utter false words in the name of dharma. Like the swan in the story, you will now be killed by your own relatives.
आपकी कोई संतान नहीं है. आप बूढ़े हैं। तुम धर्म के नाम पर मिथ्या वचन बोलते हो। कहानी में हंस की तरह, अब तुम अपने ही रिश्तेदारों द्वारा मारे जाओगे।

एवं हि कथयन्त्यन्ये नरा ज्ञानविदः पुरा भीष्म यत्तदहं सम्यग्वक्ष्यामि तव शृण्वतः
O Bhīṣma! Learned men in ancient times told this story. So that you can hear, I will now recount it completely.
हे भीष्म! प्राचीन काल में विद्वान पुरुषों ने यह कथा कही थी। ताकि तुम सुन सको, मैं अब इसे पूरा सुनाता हूँ।
In ancient times, an old swan lived near the ocean. He always spoke of dharma and instructed the birds. But his conduct was otherwise.
प्राचीन समय में समुद्र के किनारे एक बूढ़ा हंस रहता था। वह हमेशा धर्म की बात करते थे और पक्षियों को शिक्षा देते थे। लेकिन उनका आचरण कुछ और ही था.
"Practise dharma and avoid evil." These were the words the birds heard from that expounder of dharma.
"धर्म का पालन करें और बुराई से बचें।" ये वे शब्द थे जो पक्षियों ने धर्म के उस व्याख्याता से सुने थे।
O Bhīṣma! For the sake of dharma, the other birds brought him food, creatures that lived in the sea.
हे भीष्म! धर्म की खातिर, अन्य पक्षी, समुद्र में रहने वाले जीव, उसके लिए भोजन लाए।
O Bhīṣma! Those birds also left all their eggs with him and then roamed in the waters of the sea.
हे भीष्म! उन पक्षियों ने भी अपने सारे अंडे उसके पास छोड़ दिये और फिर समुद्र के जल में विचरण करने लगे।
But the evil one ate all those eggs. That swan was always attentive to his own interests, while the others were negligent.
परन्तु दुष्ट ने वे सारे अंडे खा लिये। वह हंस सदैव अपने हित के प्रति सचेत रहता था, जबकि बाकी लोग लापरवाह थे।
He ate all the eggs of others. When the number of eggs declined, an extremely intelligent one was suspicious and kept a watch on him.
उसने दूसरों के सारे अंडे खा लिए. जब अंडों की संख्या कम हो गई, तो एक बेहद बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को संदेह हुआ और उसने उस पर नजर रखी।

ततः स कथयामास दृष्ट्वा हंसस्य किल्बिषम् तेषां परमदुःखार्तः स पक्षी सर्वपक्षिणाम्
Having witnessed the swan's evil act, the bird was extremely unhappy and spoke about it to all the other birds.
हंस के बुरे कृत्य को देखकर पक्षी बहुत दुखी हुआ और उसने बाकी सभी पक्षियों को इसके बारे में बताया।
O descendant of the Kuru lineage! Those birds assembled. When they witnessed it themselves, they killed the untruthful swan.
हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! वे पक्षी इकट्ठे हो गये। जब उन्होंने स्वयं यह देखा तो उन्होंने झूठ बोलने वाले हंस को मार डाला।

ते त्वां हंससधर्माणमपीमे वसुधाधिपाः निहन्युर्भीष्म संक्रुद्धाः पक्षिणस्तमिवाण्डजम्
O Bhīṣma! Since your conduct is like that of the swan, these angry lords of the earth will kill you, like the birds killed the swan.
हे भीष्म! चूँकि तुम्हारा आचरण हंस के समान है, इसलिए ये क्रोधित पृथ्वी के स्वामी तुम्हें वैसे ही मार डालेंगे जैसे पक्षियों ने हंस को मार डाला।

गाथामप्यत्र गायन्ति ये पुराणविदो जनाः भीष्म यां तां च ते सम्यक्कथयिष्यामि भारत
O Bhīṣma! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Men who know the ancient tales sing a song about this. I will repeat it for you exactly.
हे भीष्म! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! प्राचीन कथाओं को जानने वाले पुरुष इसके बारे में गीत गाते हैं। मैं इसे आपके लिए बिल्कुल दोहराऊंगा.
O one who rides on the chariot of wings! Your act of eating the eggs contradicts your words. You will be killed in anger, because your soul shows your falsehood."
हे पंखों के रथ पर सवार! अंडे खाने का आपका कार्य आपके शब्दों का खंडन करता है। तू क्रोध में आकर मार डाला जाएगा, क्योंकि तेरा प्राण तेरा झूठ प्रगट करता है।”
